The Chattanooga Nature Center has a broad display of 30 native species including endangered and threatened species. These Animal Ambassadors have been impacted by humans in a way that does not allow them to return to the wild so they live their lives in comfort at CNC.
CNC is one of 41 facilities in the world to house one of North America’s most endangered animals, the Red Wolf. There are approximately 200 Red Wolves in the captive population at nature centers and zoos and approximately 100 in the wild population which are closely monitored by biologists at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, North Carolina. At CNC, we currently have 5 Red Wolves that are part of the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan (RWSSP). As members of the SSP we are a designated breeding site for Red Wolves. We had our first litter of pups in the Spring of 2007.
Many of these Animal Ambassadors are used in our educational programs and help thousands of school children and adults learn more about each species, their habitats, their importance to the natural world and how we can help them.
Our Animal Ambassadors can be seen on your visits to the CNC in our Wildlife Wanderland, Snake Tale Alley and Welcome Center.
